Ugadi 2023, the Hindu festival this year will be celebrated on March 22. Also known as Yugadi, the day marks Andhra Pradesh’s New Year which begins on the first day of the Hindu calendar month of Chaitra.

This day is also celebrated by Marathi and Konkani Hindus as Gudi Padwa. It is considered the traditional new year among Hindus in Maharashtra and Goa.

  • According to the age-old legend about the origin of the Ugadi festival, the creation of the universe was initiated on this day by Lord Brahma.
  • Furthermore, on this day, he continued to create months, weeks, and days to keep track of the passage of time.
  • Legend has it that Ugadi marks the first day of the creation of the universe.
  • Lord Vishnu is known as Yugaadikrit which means creator of ages or ‘Yugas’. God is worshiped on this day. It is believed that Lord Vishnu will bless his followers with a happy and prosperous life.

The word Ugadi is derived from the Sanskrit words “Yuga” and “Adi” which mean age and beginning.

Ugadi 2023: Celebrations and traditions

Celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervor by the people of the southern states of India on this day

  • clean their house,
  • decorate their homes with rangolis
  • wear new clothes.
  • Make a special dish called “Ugadi Pachadi”, prepared from six ingredients representing the six different tastes of life: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent made from six ingredients, including Tamarind, neem flower, palm sugar, mango raw, salt and green chili.
  • Perform special prayers and pujas.
  • People also prepare other traditional dishes such as pulihora (tamarind rice), bobbatlu (sweet stuffed bread) and obbattu (sweet flat bread).

  • It also falls in the Tamil month of Panguni or Chithrai, sometimes on the day after Amavasya with the 27th Nakshatra Revati.
