List of all political parties in India 2023: India has a multi-party system. As of 2023, India has six national parties, over 56 recognized state parties and 2796 unrecognized parties.

If a political party accomplishes certain objectives, it is recognized as a national or state political party by the Election Commission of India (ECI). A party recognized by the ECI enjoys certain privileges such as reserved party symbols, free airtime on state-run television and radio, advice on fixing election dates, etc

National Political Party:

A registered party is only recognized as a National Party if any of the following three conditions are met:

1. If a party wins 2% of seats in Lok Sabha (as of 2014 11 seats) from at least 3 different states.

2. At the General Election to Lok Sabha or Legislature, the party won 6% votes in 4 states along with 4 seats in Lok Sabha.

3. A Party is recognized as a Member State in four or more States.

On April 10, 2023, the Election Commission of India (ECI) revoked the national party status of three erstwhile national parties – Trinamool Congress (TMC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Communist Party India (CPI). Thereafter, the ECI recognized Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as a national party.

In the past, India had eight national parties, but now there are six.

State Political Party:

A registered party must meet any of the following conditions to be called a State Political Party:

1. A party must win at least 3% of the total seats or 3 seats in the Legislative Council.

2. A party must win at least 1 Lok Sabha seat for every 25 seats or any part thereof allotted to that State.

3. A political party must have secured at least 6% of the total valid votes cast in the general election to the Lok Sabha or State Legislative Assembly and in addition, must have won at least 1 Lok Sabha seat and 2 Legislative Council seats in that election.

4. Under the liberalization criteria, a further provision has been added to provide that even if a Party fails to win any seat in a State in the general election to the Lok Sabha or the Legislative Council of the State, that party will still be eligible to participate. is recognized as a Member State if it wins 8% or more of the total valid votes cast in the State.
