National Public Service Day 2023: Celebrated on April 21 every year to recognize the work of officers engaged in various public service agencies in the country. This day is also a reminder for civil servants to run the country’s administrative apparatus collectively and wholeheartedly serve the people. And there is no official theme to celebrate this day.

As we know, the Civil Service is the service responsible for the public administration of the country’s government. It does not include legislative, judicial and military personnel. Let us tell you that civil servants do not make any commitment to any ruling political party but are the implementers of the policies of the ruling political party.

Civil Services in India includes Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and a complete list of All Services of India and Central Services Group A and Group B. April 21 is dedicated to Civil Service workers to remember their exemplary works and to look back at what they have done over the years . The word Civil Service dates back to the British period, when the civilian employees of the British East India Company were engaged in administrative work and were called ‘Civil Servants’. Its foundation was laid by Warren Hastings and later Charles Cornwallis introduced more reforms and thus he is known as the “Father of Civil Services in India”.

April 21 was chosen to commemorate the day in 1947 when Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Home Minister of Independent India, addressed the Administrative Service probation officers at Metcalf House in Delhi. He called civil servants “India’s steel frame”. These are civil servants working in different agencies, departments or at different levels in the government, acting as a supporting pillar for the country’s administrative system.

Why is April 21 celebrated as National Public Service Day?

Its origin is related to 1947 when on 21 April, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, Home Minister of Independent India addressed the trainee officers at the All India Administrative Services Training School at Metcalfe House, Delhi. He delivered a powerful speech and empowered Civil Servants to carry out the true role of national service, leaving behind past experiences. In his speech, he called civil servants ‘the steel frame of India’. The first such event was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on April 21, 2006. And since then April 21 is celebrated as National Civil Servants Day.

National Public Service Day 2023: Significance

This day is dedicated to recognizing and inspiring government employees. The government also recognizes the achievements of veterans on this day by awarding them medals in recognition of their service. The Prime Minister of India confers the Excellence Awards on this day to honor the nation’s civil servants for their significant contributions to public service. So the main goals are:

  • To encourage and appreciate the work and efforts of Civil Service officers.
  • The central government uses this opportunity to evaluate the work of various sections of the civil service.
  • The central government rewards and rewards individuals and groups with outstanding achievements.
