Since the inception of Radio in 1937, All India Radio has developed in various fields. Today, AIR News broadcasts 607 news bulletins in 92 languages and dialects every day.

World Radio Day 2023: Theme
In 2023, the theme for World Radio Day is “Radio and Peace” to focus on the importance of independent radio to promote peace and prevent conflict.
The theme of World Radio Day 2021 is ‘New World, New Radio’. The theme was decided keeping in mind the services provided by this medium amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It is divided into three subsections, mentioned below:
1- Evolution: The world changes and radio evolves. It addresses radio’s resilience and its sustainability.
2- Innovation: The world changes and radio adapts and innovates. It must adopt new technologies to keep mobility relevant and accessible everywhere and to everyone.
3- Connectivity: The world changes and radio connects. It highlights the services of radio to our society in times of natural disasters, socio-economic crises, epidemics, etc.
World Radio Day: History
The UNESCO Executive Committee has asked the General Assembly to declare World Radio Day. In 2011, UNESCO carried out an extensive consultation process following Spain’s recommendations. The project leader of Academia Espanola de la Radio has received support from a number of stakeholders, including major international broadcasters as well as broadcasting unions and associations. Finally in 1946, the day United Nations Radio was established, the Director-General of UNESCO proposed it. The 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference declared 13 February as World Radio Day. The United Nations General Assembly officially endorsed UNESCO’s declaration of World Radio Day on 14 January 2013. During the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a resolution was adopted to declare February 13 is World Radio Day.

The main purpose of celebrating World Radio Day is to raise awareness among the public and the media about enhancing the importance of radio. It also encourages decision-makers to establish and provide access to information via radio, enhance networking and create a form of international cooperation between broadcasters.

Several journalism universities and media NGOs also celebrate World Radio Day, focusing on the year 2023. Commercial and state-owned radio stations also celebrate the day on air and invite experts and intercultural media to discuss cultural traditions and heritage. Students pursuing Journalism conduct multilingual radio programs on student radio and discuss the development of their country. They also share their multimedia content through social networks.
What are radio waves and how do they work?
Radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation used in communications technologies such as television, cell phones, and radio. These devices receive radio waves and convert them into mechanical vibrations in the speaker to create sound waves. The radio frequency spectrum is a small portion of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum.
The electromagnetic spectrum is divided into seven regions according to decreasing wavelength, increasing energy, and frequency. Some names are radio waves, microwaves, infrared (IR), visible light, ultraviolet (UV), X-rays, and gamma rays. In the EM spectrum, radio waves have the longest wavelengths.
Radio waves transmit music, conversations, images and data invisibly through the air that can be millions of miles away and occur in thousands of different ways. As discussed above, radio waves are invisible and cannot be detected by humans. But we cannot ignore that it has a huge impact on society. All wireless technologies use radio waves for communication whether cell phones, baby monitors, cordless phones, etc.
Therefore, World Radio Day is celebrated on February 13 every year to raise awareness about radio as a medium of providing information about diverse cultures and traditions. Since this century, it has played an important role in human life and so this year’s theme focuses on radio and its diversity.
