What is malaria and how is it caused?

According to WHO, this is an acute fever. The cause is that the Plasmodium parasite is spread to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito.

Five species of parasites cause malaria in humans, of which two, P. falciparum and P. vivax, pose the greatest threat. The most dangerous malaria parasite is P. falciparum, the most common parasite on the African continent. The predominant malaria parasite in most countries outside sub-Saharan Africa is P. Vivax.

Thus, it can be said that malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by parasites. If left untreated, it can develop severe complications and death. According to the CDC, each year about 2,000 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States.

What are the symptoms of malaria?

– Chills

– Fever

– Headache

– General feeling of discomfort

– Nausea and vomiting

– Diarrhea

– Stomach-ache

– Muscle or joint pain

– Tired

– Rapid breathing

– Fast heart beat

-Cough

It is also said that some people with malaria experience cycles of malaria “attacks”. The fever usually begins with shaking and chills, followed by a high fever, sweating, and then a return to normal temperature. Signs and symptoms of malaria begin within a few weeks of being bitten by an infected mosquito. In addition, some types of malaria parasites can lie dormant in the human body for up to a year.

What are the risk factors?

For developing malaria, the biggest risk factor is living in or visiting areas where malaria is common. These are the tropical and subtropical regions of

-South and Southeast Asia

– Sub-Saharan Africa

– Central America and Northern South America

– Pacific Islands, etc

Furthermore, the level of risk is determined by local malaria prevention, seasonal variations in malaria rates, and the precautions people take to avoid mosquito bites.

People at high risk are young children, the elderly, pregnant women and their fetuses, and travelers from malaria-free areas.

World Malaria Day 2023: Prevention

Some measures are listed below to avoid mosquito bites:

WHO recommends widespread use of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine in children living in areas with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission from October 2021. Medicine for saw a significant reduction in cases of malaria and fatal severe malaria in children.
