Syed Abdul Nazeer is a former judge of the Supreme Court of India, currently serving as the 3rd Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He is also a former judge of the Karnataka High Court. He was appointed Governor of Andhra Pradesh on February 12, 2023. Nazeer succeeded Biswabhushan Harichandan this Sunday.

- In 1983, After obtaining his law degree, Nazeer became an Advocate and practiced at the Karnataka High Court in Bangalore.
- In 2003, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court.
- Gradually he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Supreme Court.
- In 2017, while serving as a judge of the Karnataka High Court, Nazeer was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
- Nazeer became the third judge ever to be promoted in this manner, despite the fact that he was never appointed chief justice of some high court.

- In 2017, Nazeer was the only Muslim judge sitting in a multi-faith bench to hear the controversial Triple Talaq.
- Nazeer was also among the five judges in the historic 2019 Supreme Court verdict on the Ayodhya dispute.
- He ruled in favor of Ram Mandir and finally ended the years-long dispute with a 5-0 verdict.
- In 2016, Nazeer led a constitutional bench that heard cases related to demonetization of Indian currency notes by the Government of India.
- Justice Nazeer was sworn in as a Supreme Court judge in February 2017.
- He retires on January 4, 2023.

Syed Abdul Nazeer compares his early years as a lawyer to “duck syndrome”.
“I’m like a duck gliding smoothly on the water’s surface but actually rowing furiously underwater just to keep myself afloat.” Justice Nazeer expressed in his farewell address to the Supreme Court.
On Justice Nazeer’s last working day, Chief Justice Chandrachud, who is also a member of the Ayodhya Bench, said
“Justice Nazeer is not neutral between right and wrong but he stands up for what is right. We shared the Ayodhya Seat and we worked together and took decisions together.”
Remembered for his speech in 2021 at the National Council meeting of the Akhil Bharatiya Adhivakta Parishad in Hyderabad in
Justice Nazeer emphasized the need to eliminate the colonial legal system detrimental to national interests and move towards
“the great legal tradition according to Manu, Kautilya, Katyayana, Brihaspati, Narada, Parashara, Yajnavalkya and other legal giants of ancient India”.
He is also known to have a deep passion for theater. He not only wrote dialogues and composed songs for his dramas but was also famous for his Tulu songs.

Justice Nazeer once said that although he had a very difficult early life, he had to work on his uncle’s farm to make a living, collecting fish that drifted ashore on the Panambur coast to supplement the family’s income. ‘he lived a dream’.
