The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project faced backlash when YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president YS Sharmila protested against the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project in the southern state to Delhi on Tuesday.

She called it “India’s biggest irrigation scam”, robbing Rs 1.2 lakh crore.

During the protest, the President was arrested by the Delhi police for marching to Parliament from Jantar Mantar along with others.

The group had intended to create a ruckus against the Telangana KCR government over the alleged scam.

Kaleshwaram Project: Details and Description

  • The project is being built on the Godavari river at Kaleshwaram village in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
  • This is known as the largest multi-stage lift irrigation project in the world.
  • Covering a distance of 500 km across 13 districts in Telangana.
  • The purpose of the project is to produce 240 TMC of water for irrigation, domestic and industrial use.
  • With 20 reservoirs and seven links, the project establishes each link to transfer water from the source to a storage system and/or distribution network system to irrigate the ayacut.
  • According to current data, the project is being built at a cost of Rs 80,000 crore.

Kaleshwaram Project: History

  • In 2019, Kaleshwaram project was inaugurated.
  • It is an offshoot of the Dr BR Ambedkar Pranahita Chevella Sujala Sravanthi project initiated in 2005 by the then Chief Minister of unified Andhra Pradesh, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, father of YS Sharmila.
  • In 2014, after the branch, it became impossible to keep the original design.
  • Maharashtra opposes the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) project near Tummidi Hetti across the Pranahita river as large areas are being submerged in their state.
  • Then, in 2016, Telangana and Maharashtra reached an agreement.
  • Keeping in mind these changes and suggestions of CWC, the original project was redesigned and split into Dr BR Ambedkar Pranahita project and Kaleshwaram project.
  • The former is located in Adilabad district while the latter is in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.

Kaleshwaram Project: Key Features

  • For a lift irrigation project, the pump is its most important feature.
  • This type of irrigation is different from other types of irrigation because the water is not transported by natural gravity but must be lifted by a pump.
  • The Kaleshwaram project is said to have the world’s largest underground pumping station, located 470 feet below the earth’s surface.
  • The station has seven ‘Bahubali’ engines that can pump 2,376 tonnes of water.
