What is the Golden Globe Award?

The Golden Globe Awards are presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for outstanding achievements in Television and Film (both American and International). They are extremely important in the Entertainment industry. The Golden Globe Awards are one of the most important awards in the Entertainment industry and every other award from the Oscars, BAFTAs to SAG Awards are secondary. It was first shown on January 20, 1944, for excellence in Motion Pictures and Television.

Who chooses the winner?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards the Golden Globes and its members vote on the winners. You might be shocked to learn that only 88 members chose this year’s Golden Globe winners.

What are the eligibility criteria for the Golden Globe Awards?

1- The eligibility period for Golden Globe Award nominations is from January 1 to December 31.

2- The film must be 70 minutes or more in length. It must be issued and screened for active membership in greater Los Angeles within the qualifying period, which is January 1 to December 31.

3- Motion pictures will only be considered released if they are available for exhibition in theaters or on pay-per-view cable/digital pay-per-view in greater Los Angeles for a minimum period of time 7 days before midnight of the eligibility deadline date, which is December 31.

4- For the Foreign Language Film category, the film does not have to be released in the US and must have at least 51% of the dialogue in a language other than English. The film must be released in its country of origin between 1 November and 31 December, i.e. 14 months before the Award.

5- If a foreign film due to censorship issues is not released in its country of origin, it may be eligible for a Golden Globe Award provided that the film was released in the United States one week before the award .

6- For television programs, the program must be broadcast during the prime time frame of 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the US or from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. on Sundays. However, if the TV show is only on pay-per-view or through digital movie distribution.

7- The TV show must be produced in the US or can be a financial and creative production co-production between an American company and a foreign company.

8- Reality and unscripted television shows are not considered for this award.
