The foundation of the Center for Policy Research was laid by DH Pai Panandiker, former general secretary of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and renowned economist of the country. The governing body of CPR includes former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, BV Verghese, former CJI YV Chandrachud, Pratap Bhanu Mehta, etc.

Recently on Wednesday, CPR announced that the Ministry of Home Affairs had informed that CPR’s registration under FCRA has been suspended for 180 days.

Additionally, on Monday, the Government of India suspended the Center for Policy Research’s Foreign Contribution Management Act license. This incident actually happened five months after the Income Tax Department conducted a survey at the premises of CPR Oxfam India and IPSMF, a funding platform for many digital media organizations.

Established CPR

The Center for Policy Research was established in 1973 as a think tank. Its mission is to contribute to a “more robust public discourse on issues affecting life in India”. CPR has inherited the legacy of one of India’s leading public policy think tanks and an “independent, non-profit, non-partisan organisation”. dedicated to conducting research that contributes to high-quality scholarship and better policies” as stated on the school’s website.

Functions of the Policy Research Center

The Center for Policy Research (CPR) serves a wide range of audiences. It brings together experts from a multitude of fields working under the umbrella of conducting policy-relevant research.

According to CPR’s official website, research areas include climate change, air pollution, education, economics, environmental law and justice, energy and power, federalism, governance , accountability and public finance, Indian politics, health and nutrition, land rights, international relations and security, sanitation, employment, social justice, technology, housing capacity water, water and urbanization.

Most of CPR’s work involves helping policymakers and governments make informed decisions based on the scholarship provided by CPR.

Many of the country’s prominent scholars, officials and intellectuals are affiliated with the Center for Policy Research in various ways. As stated above, the center was founded by DH Pai Panandiker.
