The mission is taking place at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and it is the first of three planned CHAPEA missions.
NASA announced “The CHAPEA mission, or Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog, began on Sunday, June 25, when the volunteer crew of four entered their new home at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to begin simulating the Martian surface lasted 378 days.
“This is the first of three planned missions. NASA will use research obtained from CHAPEA to determine how to best support the health and performance of the crew while living on Mars during a long-duration exploration mission,” it added.
The crew of CHAPEA 1 consisted of four individuals:
- Kelly Haston: A research scientist and mission commander.
- Ross Brockwell: A Structural Engineer and Mission Flight Engineer.
- Nathan Jones: An Emergency Physician and Delegation Medical Officer.
- Yasmina Mirza: A Microbiologist and Mission Scientist.

The goal of CHAPEA 1 was to study the effects of long-term isolation and confinement on the health and performance of aircrew.
The crew will live and work in a simulated Mars habitat, and they will be exposed to a variety of stressors, including communication delays, resource constraints, and environmental challenges.
NASA states: “During the CHAPEA simulation, crew members will perform different types of mission activities, including simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, personal birth, exercise and plant growth.”
“To make Mars as realistic as possible, the crew will also have to deal with environmental stressors such as limited resources, isolation and equipment failure,” it added.
