Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is an annual event held in the United States in May to celebrate and recognize the contributions and achievements of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Native Americans. Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in American history and culture.
Why is APAHM held in May?
Starting in 1977 as a week-long celebration, APAHM quickly expanded to a month-long celebration in 1992. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants first arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and completed the transcontinental railroad, largely built by Chinese immigrants, on May 10, 1869.
During Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, events and activities are held across the country to celebrate the rich history and cultural diversity of AAPI communities.
