A technique known as the “blue bug,” akin to “phone wiretapping,” allows savvy hackers to access mobile commands on Bluetooth-enabled devices in discoverable mode. .
How dangerous is bluebugging for your device?
German researcher Martin Herfurt created the blue bug in 2004. Initially a threat to laptops with Bluetooth capabilities, it later turned its attention to cell phones and PDAs. To create a backdoor attack and then return control of the phone to its owner, blue buging deceives the security of the target phone.
The Bluebug program can also create a call forwarding application, allowing hackers to receive calls intended for the target phone.
Bluebugging has advanced to the point where it is now possible to control the target phone using a Bluetooth headset. It does this by pretending to be a headset and “tricking” the target phone into following the call. The hacker has access to the target phone’s contacts, calendar, and messages in addition to being able to receive calls intended for that phone.
What are the steps to prevent Bluebugging?
- By removing or disabling Bluetooth paired devices, users can stop that blue error phenomenon.
- Update your smartphone’s operating system regularly.
- Limit use of public WiFi.
- Install a VPN as an additional layer of protection.
- When not in use, the Bluetooth setting should always be turned off.
