India joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in 2005 as an observer country. It later became an official member of the group in 2017 at the Astana Summit. Over the past six years, India has succeeded in taking a positive and proactive stance in most SCO activities.
In September 2022, at the SCO Summit in Samarkand, India took over the SCO presidency from Uzbekistan. During India’s chairmanship, the SCO has succeeded in achieving new milestones and increasing participation and interaction around the world.
India has developed five new focus areas of cooperation within the Cooperation Organization (SCO). These are Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Digital Inclusion, Shared Buddhist Heritage, Digital Inclusion and Traditional Medicine.
An expert group working on Traditional Medicine and an expert group on Entrepreneurship and Innovation have been established on India’s initiative.
While Prime Minister Modi presides over the SCO summit, the government hopes to end its presidency by consensus in the manner of a joint communique to address issues related to de-radicalization. , Afghanistan and the need to improve global governance, counterterrorism, connectivity and energy structures.
At the summit, Prime Minister Modi stated that we do not see the SCO as an extended neighborhood but rather as one big family. He also stated that the pillars of our vision are Security, Economic Development, Connectivity, Unity, Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and finally Environmental Protection. The Prime Minister also said that the SCO has succeeded in emerging as an important platform for peace, prosperity and development of Eurasia.
