This day serves as a reminder to the nation’s civil service officers to manage government operations cooperatively and with commitment to the welfare of the people. However, the day was celebrated without any official theme from the officials.

A pivotal moment in the history of this day occurred on 21 April 1947, when Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, the Home Minister of Independent India, addressed the trainee officers at the Service Training College. All India Administrative Service at Metcalfe House, Delhi. Since then April 21 has been observed as National Civil Service Day every year. He delivered a stirring speech, inspiring civil servants to leave the past behind and take on the true role of national public service. He described civil servants as “the steel frame of India” in his speech.
