Shelly Oberoi, first-time councilor of Delhi’s East Patel Nagar ward and candidate for mayor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has won the Municipal Council of Delhi (MCD). Besides, AAP MLA Shoaib Iqbal’s son and two-term councilor of Chandni Chowk, Aaley Mohammed, has also been nominated by AAP for the post of deputy mayor.

Professional career

In September 2014, DU hired Shelly Oberoi as an assistant professor. Shelly then held the position of assistant professor and visiting lecturer at Mumbai’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in 2021. Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Indira Gandhi National Open University are two government institutions where Shelly was also a professor (IGNOU) .

As of December 2022, she has more than 35 journals and research articles, including Emotional Intelligence: An Extensive Literature Review, Impact of Blockchain Technology and 5G/IoT on Supply Chain Management and trade finance, Cybersecurity in India: Threats and Challenges, et al. Shelly’s research results have been shared on many domestic and international forums. Shelly has been actively involved in many Faculty Development Programs and television shows like Gyaan Vaani and Gyaan Darshan.

Political career

Shelly Oberoi became a volunteer for AAP in 2013 and participated in various campaigns of the organization. Then, in 2020, she was appointed vice-president of AAP’s women’s wing in New Delhi.

In December 2022, Shelly contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election on AAP ticket. She defeated the BJP candidate by a margin of 269 votes. She was then proposed by AAP as the mayoral candidate for the MCD elections. And once again, Shelly defeated BJP candidate Rekha Gupta by 34 votes and became the first Mayor of Delhi or Woman Mayor of Aam Aadmi Party.

Mayoral elections are held every year. Section 35 of the DMC Act states that “the company at its first annual meeting shall elect one of its members as chairman known as mayor and another member as deputy mayor of the company” .
