The Indian Premier League is a T20 cricket tournament known for its short and intense matches. Blistering batting and high totals are common in the IPL and excite the viewers the most. And the players try their best to provide fans with entertainment at the highest level. Thus, strategy and prudence take a backseat to aggression.
Most players come in and start hitting boundaries without feeling out on the field or warming up. This often results in very large totals perhaps in 50-over ODI matches. However, in the 20-over IPL, time is of the essence and the batsmen try their best to score big scores. Unfortunately, this approach can also be detrimental and playing recklessly can lead to early loss of points.
There have been times when strong teams, including World Cup winners, were beaten by double-digit totals. Cricket is an unpredictable sport and IPL even more so. See here the list of teams with the lowest scores in IPL history from 2008 to 2023.

Lowest IPL team score (2008 – 2023)
- The record for lowest IPL total belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore. Coincidentally, they also hold the record for highest IPL points. RCB were bowled out by Kolkata Knight Riders for 49 runs in just 9.4 overs in IPL 2017. RCB six times featured in the list of top 25 teams with lowest ever score in IPL history.
- Rajasthan Royals are next with a total of 58 runs in 15.1 overs, playing against RCB of all teams. No wonder RCB is often called the strongest and weakest team of the IPL.
- The clash between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023 once again resulted in poor results on the part of RR. In match 60, RCB restricted RR to 59 runs in 10.3 overs while chasing a target of 172. This was the match that helped eliminate RR from the playoffs by reducing their net RR.
- Delhi Daredevils occupied the fourth and fifth positions, being defeated by 66 and 67 runs respectively, both in IPL 2017.

The lowest team score in IPL history is a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport and the challenges teams can face in the fast-paced world of T20 cricket. Throughout the years, there have been instances where teams have been subjected to a relentless bowling attack or suffered unfortunate incidents, resulting in very low team scores.
While IPL is famous for its high-scoring encounters and explosive batting, these rare instances of low-scoring teams add an element of intrigue and unpredictability to the tournament. They serve as a humbling reminder that even the most formidable teams can falter under pressure or face exceptional performances from their opponents.
