Cyclone Biparjoy was a tropical cyclone that formed in the southeastern Arabian Sea on June 6, 2023. It was the first cyclone to form in the Arabian Sea this season. The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning of a severe cyclonic storm in the coming days. IMD predicts that cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” will gradually strengthen in the next 24 hours and move almost in a north-northwest direction in the next 3 days. At 8:30 a.m., the storm’s center was at latitude 14.0°N and longitude 66.0°E, about 850 km west-southwest of Goa, 900 km southwest of Mumbai, 930 km from Porbandar south-southwest and 1,220 km south of Karachi.

The name “Biparjoy” was given to the storm by Bangladesh. It means “calamity” or “disaster” in Bengali. This name was chosen from a list of names submitted by member states of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to India’s west coast. The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rain in Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. IMD also warns of strong winds with speeds of up to 160 km/h.

The cyclone is not expected to cause widespread damage in India, but it could cause some flooding and power outages. People are advised to take precautions and stay safe from the storm.
