Niger or the Republic of Niger is a landlocked country in West Africa. It is bordered by Mali to the north, Burkina Faso to the east, Benin to the south, Nigeria and Chad to the southwest. It is a large country, with an area of more than 1,267 thousand square kilometers. It is the second largest country in West Africa, after Mali. Niger’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is $16.67 billion, according to a report from the World Bank.
The country gained its independence from France in 1960. Currently the country is a semi-presidential republic, in which the President of Niger is the head of state and the Prime Minister of Niger is the head of government. The officials holding these positions are selected through a representative democratic electoral process in a multi-party system. The most recent President of the Republic of Niger was Mohamed Bazoum.
