What is the history of International Youth Day?
This date was first proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999, on the recommendation of the World Ministerial Conference on Youth in Lisbon, Portugal.
The goal of the day is to promote youth participation in decision-making at all levels, and to emphasize the importance of young people in building a more peaceful and sustainable future.
This day is also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of young people and advocate for their rights.
The UN mentioned: “In 1999, in resolution 54/120, the General Assembly adopted the recommendation of the World Ministerial Conference on Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared as World Youth Day. Youth International.”

- “Educational radio program. Contact popular local/national radio stations to request a panel with prominent individuals and youth.
- Hold a public (virtual) meeting or debate to discuss youth contributions to global issues.
- Start roundtable discussions between adults and youth to promote intergenerational understanding.
- Organize youth forums to exchange ideas and discuss cultural backgrounds to help youth accept others and spread a culture of nonviolence.
- Organize a (virtual) concert to promote International Youth Day and kick off the Year. Invite your local musicians and combine it with a panel discussion or invite a politician or policymaker to host the keynote.
- Create an “information point” on youth issues in town/village centres, at high schools or at university centres.
- Organize an exhibition. Public spaces are allowed to exhibit art, showcase the challenges facing today’s youth or how young people are contributing to development. Strive to involve young people in the fields of culture, art and music to raise awareness of issues related to youth.
- Write to your Youth Minister to inform them of the challenges young people face in their daily lives and suggest solutions. A list of Youth Ministers can be found at www.un.org/youth.”
