List of major coal mines in India
Coal Mining: Simply put, Coal Mining is the extraction of coal deposits from the Earth’s surface and from underground. Because coal was the primary source of energy that fueled the Industrial Revolution, industrial growth led to the exploitation of coal mines on a large scale.
By the end of the 20th century, open pit mines replaced underground mines as the main source of coal in industrialized countries.
Due to the advancement of technology, coal mining from surface and underground mines is today a highly productive and mechanized operation.
India’s first coal mine was Raniganj, where coal mining began under the East India Company in 1774.
Because India is rich in ancient hard rocks, it is a reserve of many types of mineral resources.

Coal distribution in India includes the following two types:
- The Gondwana coal mine is 250 million years old
- Tertiary coal mines are between 15 and 60 million years old.
Gondwana Coal Mine-
- Accounts for 98% of total coal reserves in India
- Accounts for 99% of coal production in India.
- Charcoal from here is moisture-free and contains phosphorus and sulfur.
- The carbon content in Gondwana coal is less than the 350 million year old Carbon coal which is almost non-existent in India because it is much younger.
Tertiary coal mine-
- Its Carbon content is low but the coal is still rich in moisture and sulfur.
- They are mainly limited to areas outside the peninsula
- Some of the major regions include Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Darjeeling Himalayan foothills in West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.

Some key information about coal mines that you need to know
- Dhanbad is one of the oldest coal mines in Jharkhand. This is also India’s richest coal mine. This place is known as the warehouse for the best metallurgical coal, coke.
- Giridih or Karbhari coal mines produce the best coking coal in India for metallurgical purposes.
- The main producing districts of the country are Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri.
- Ranked 2nd in reserves belongs to Talcher after Raniganj with 24.374 million tons.
- In most of the thermal power plants in Talcher, coal is suitable for steam and gas production purposes.
- Most of the coal reserves are in the Godavari valley.
- Possible cooperative companies are located at Kothagudem and Singareni.
- Coal found in Assam has low ash and high coking quality.
- High sulfur content, good for metallurgical purposes.
- MP’s largest coal mine is Singrauli.
