International Labor Day: History
On May 1, 1886, labor unions went on strike in the United States and demanded that workers not be forced to work more than eight hours a day.

However, the strike did not have an immediate effect on workers’ jobs, but it did help establish the eight-hour workday in several countries around the world.

In India, celebrating Labor Day was the first initiative taken by the Kisan Labor Party of Hindustan, in which Comrade Malayapuram Singaravelu Chettiar, the founder of the first union, arranged two meetings to celebrate this day. One meeting was held at Triplicane Beach and another at the beach opposite the Madras High Court. Singaravelar passed a resolution that the government should declare a national holiday on May 1 and mark the day as Labor Day. For the first time, red flags were used in India.
