World International Justice Day is celebrated on 17 July to commemorate the adoption of the Rome Statute. The Rome Statute is the treaty that established the International Criminal Court (ICC) on July 17, 1998. The ICC is a permanent international court specializing in prosecuting individuals responsible for genocide, crimes against against humanity, war crimes and crimes of aggression. According to the official website of the ICC, “On 17 July 1998, 120 countries adopted a law in Rome – known as the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (“Rome Statute”) – establishment of the International Criminal Court. For the first time in human history, nations decided to accept the jurisdiction of a permanent international criminal court to prosecute the perpetrators of the most serious crimes committed on their territory or by their nationals after the entry into force of the Rome Statute. on July 1, 2002.”
