International Day of Human Solidarity: History
General Assembly Resolution 57/265 of 20 December 2002 established the World Solidarity Fund. In February 2003, the United Nations Development Program established it as a trust fund. Its main goal is to eradicate poverty and promote social and human development in underdeveloped countries, especially among the most disadvantaged populations.
Then, on 22 December 2005, the General Assembly declared in resolution 60/209 that solidarity is one of its fundamental and enduring values. Because it will shape human interaction in the 21st century, it was decided to designate December 20 as the annual International Human Solidarity Day.
International Day of Human Solidarity: Meaning
The United Nations Organization says the International Human Solidarity Day is:
- a day that celebrates our unity in diversity;
- a day to remind governments to honor their commitments in international agreements;
- a day to raise public awareness of the importance of solidarity;
- a day to encourage debate on ways to promote solidarity to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals including eradicating poverty;
- day of action to encourage new initiatives aimed at eradicating poverty.
