Happy National Donut Day 2023: National Donut (or Doughnut) Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year. The day marks the importance of the happy meal during World War I. And this year it falls on June 2.
This celebration of the favorite food of Barack Obama, Homer Simpson and the police has its roots in the Salvation Army’s participation in World War I. Volunteers on the front lines of the war chose donuts as the most comforting meal. It is said that these volunteers even used war helmets as a tool to fry seven donuts at once. These brave volunteers later became known as the “doughnut girls.”
Then, in 1938, National Donut Day was established to honor members of the Salvation Army who risked their lives to help soldiers during World War I.
