Happy Bonalu 2023: Bonalu is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated every year. Colorful festivals are popularly held in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad to honor Goddess Mahakali. When is Bonalu in 2023?
Bonalu is a 21-day festival. The twin cities of Secunderabad and Hyderabad participate in this festival every year along with other parts of the state. It is observed during the month of Ashada Masam, which falls around July and/or August.
The festival dedicated to Goddess Mahakali will be held from June 25 to July 16 this year.
Why is Bonalu honored?
Bonalu is celebrated with great grandeur and celebration in honor of the goddess Mahakali. According to the most famous legend about Bonalu, the best time to offer Bonalu to the goddess is during Ashada Maasam, or the season from late June to August. It is considered that Goddess Mahakali returns to her ancestors’ abode. . This practice is the same as how a married daughter would be treated if she visited her parents’ house every year for vacation and got a lot of attention.
Other folklore mentions Mahakali as a savior who saved the people of Hyderabad and Secunderabad from the Plague in the 19th century.
How is Bonalu organized?
During the Bonalu festival, families make offerings to the Mother Goddess and share them with their loved ones and guests. Women dress up for this important occasion with traditional Sari, jewelry and other accessories. The maidens wear half sari or lehengas with cholis, jewelry, and other traditional accents. Along with saffron bracelets, bracelets and sari for the Mother Goddess, they bring special rice cookers cooked with milk and jaggery in a newly decorated copper or clay pot with neem leaves, turmeric and red lipstick. top.
When the women carrying Bonalu approached the temple, people poured water on their feet to appease the Goddess’s aggression. To pay homage to the native deity, some ecstatic women perform the balancing pot dance (Bonam) to the rhythm of the drums. In the past, people worshiped male buffalo in front of the temple to ward off evil spirits, but nowadays, people offer rooster instead.
Every year, thousands of devotees gather to honor Mahakali. On the first Sunday of Ashadham, festivities take place at Jagadamba temple in Golconda Fort in Hyderabad. On the third Sunday, at Pochamma and Katta Maisamma temples in Chilkalguda and Lal Darwaza’s Matheswari temple in Hyderabad’s Old City. On the second Sunday, people visit Balkampet Yellamma Temple in Balkampet, Ujjaini Mahakali Temple and Gandimaisamma Temple in Regimental Bazar in Secunderabad. Other temples where Bonalu is observed include Muthyalamma temple in Shah Ali Banda and Akkanna Madanna temple in Haribowli.
