Why is Bonalu honored?

Bonalu is celebrated with great grandeur and celebration in honor of the goddess Mahakali. How is Bonalu organized?

During the Bonalu festival, families make offerings to the Mother Goddess and share them with their loved ones and guests. Women dress up for this important occasion with traditional Sari, jewelry and other accessories. The maidens wear half sari or lehengas with cholis, jewelry, and other traditional accents. Along with saffron bracelets, bracelets and sari for the Mother Goddess, they bring special rice cookers cooked with milk and jaggery in a newly decorated copper or clay pot with neem leaves, turmeric and red lipstick. top.

When the women carrying Bonalu approached the temple, people poured water on their feet to appease the Goddess’s aggression. Every year, thousands of devotees gather to honor Mahakali. On the first Sunday of Ashadham, festivities take place at Jagadamba temple in Golconda Fort in Hyderabad. On the third Sunday, at Pochamma and Katta Maisamma temples in Chilkalguda and Lal Darwaza’s Matheswari temple in Hyderabad’s Old City. On the second Sunday, people visit Balkampet Yellamma Temple in Balkampet, Ujjaini Mahakali Temple and Gandimaisamma Temple in Regimental Bazar in Secunderabad. Other temples where Bonalu is observed include Muthyalamma temple in Shah Ali Banda and Akkanna Madanna temple in Haribowli.
