Guru Arjan Dev Diwas: Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev or Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Arjan Dev is being . It is celebrated on the 24th day of Jeth, the third month of the Sikh calendar. This day also marks the observance of Chabeel Day, an important part of the Shaheedi Diwas of the Fifth Sikh Guru.

Who is Guru Arjan Dev?

Guru Arjan Dev was born in 1563 in Goindwal or Tarn Taran district. His maternal grandfather was Guru Amardas, the third Sikh Guru and his father was Guru Ramdas, the fourth Sikh Guru. He was the fifth Sikh Guru and the first Sikh martyr, who was executed on the orders of Jehangir, the Mughal emperor. His major achievements include compiling the first edition of the Sikh scripture Adi Granth, also known as Guru Granth Sahib. Then Adi Granth was included in Harmandir Sahib.

Guru Arjan Dev is the author of many other books such as Sukhmani Sahib Bani. He wrote 2000 hymns himself and this is one of the largest hymn collections in the world. He is also known to have personally prepared the map of the Golden Temple, creating doors on all sides signifying acceptance of all castes and religions in the Gurudwara. He was the man behind the construction of the Golden Temple in Amritsar. After his death, Guru Hargobind Singh, his son, succeeded him as the sixth guru of Sikhism.

How did Guru Arjan Dev die?

It was in 1696 when Mughal emperor Jehangir ordered the arrest of Guru Arjan Dev at Lahore Fort. It is said that he was arrested due to his growing influence over the people and thus the influence of Sikhism over them.

Guru Arjan Dev blessed Jehangir’s rebellious son Khusrau, which angered the Mughal king and ordered his immediate execution. His death was extremely painful and unimaginable. Guru Arjan Dev was made to sit on a burning plate while hot sand was poured on him. He was then forced to bathe in the river and tortured continuously for five days before dying. In short, he was burned alive for favoring the emperor’s rebellious son.

How is Guru Arjan Dev Diwas observed?

On this day around the world, people celebrate Langars (a Sikh community feeding tradition), religious events and recitations of the Guru Granth Sahib. Additionally, every year a group of Sikh pilgrims visit the Gurdwara of Dehra Sahib in Lahore, Pakistan. The group is called Jatha. This year Jatha is scheduled on June 6.
