Gujarat Day 2023: May 1 is celebrated as International Labor Day or May Day and is also an important day in Gujarat and Maharashtra. Both states came into existence on this day in 1960 through the Bombay Reorganization Act. It represents the cultural heritage and identity of Gujratis. Several events are held on this day to mark the celebrations.
Gujarat – The legendary land is a northwestern state of India. In the northeast, it borders Pakistan and Rajasthan, in the east with Madhya Pradesh and in the south with Maharashtra and the union territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The Arabian Sea borders the state of Gujarat both to the west and southwest.

Gujarat: History
It is believed that Lord Krishna left Mathura and settled on the west coast of Saurashtra, which later came to be known as Dwarka, the gateway. The state later had various kingdoms including the Mauryas, Guptas, Pratiharas and others. Gujarat witnessed progress and prosperity during the reign of the Chalukyas or Solankis. Gujarat also faced some difficult times under Muslim, Maratha and British rule. Before independence, the present territory of Gujarat was occupied in two parts, British territory and Princely Dominion. With the reorganization of the states, Saurashtra Union and Kachchh Union Territory along with the erstwhile British, Gujarat became a part of the largest bilingual Bombay State. The current state of Gujarat was formed on May 1, 1960. It is located on the west coast of India.
State Reorganization Act, 1956
Most of the states were reorganized along linguistic lines under the States Reorganization Act of 1956. This Act also merged the Gujarati and Marathi speaking areas together, leading to agitations in both this area. A local political movement called the Mahagujarat movement demanded a separate state for Gujarati speakers from the bilingual Indian state of Bombay. And finally, the movement succeeded and the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra were established.
The new State of Bombay was formed on 1 November 1956 with the enactment of the States Reorganization Act, 1956 which included the Marathi speaking areas of the erstwhile Bombay State, the Vidarbha region of the erstwhile Madhya Pradesh State, the Marathwada of the erstwhile Hyderabad State and the erstwhile Saurashtra and Kutch states. Subsequently, on 1 May 1960, with the enactment of the Bombay Reorganization Act, 1960, the old States of Kutch and Saurashtra were separated from the State of Bombay to form the new State of Gujarat and the State of Bombay was renamed Maharashtra. .
Introduction to the Mahagujarat Movement
In 1948, after independence, to unite the entire Gujarati speaking community under one administrative body, a Mahagujarat conference took place and on 1 May 1960, the State of Bombay split into the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. ‘Mahagujarat’ refers to the entire Gujarati-speaking region including Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutchh.
