Ganga Dusshera 2023: Ganga Dussehra is a Hindu festival that celebrates the avatarana (lower reaches) of the Ganges River on Earth. It is as popular as Gangavataran in some parts of the country. The Ganga Dusshera or Dasara festival is celebrated on the last day of the 10-day celebration. This year it falls on May 30.

Ganga Dasara 2023: Date & Time
Ganga Dasara is celebrated on Dashami Tithi of Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha which usually falls in May or June of the Gregorian calendar. According to Drik Panchang, it is celebrated a day before Nirjala Ekadashi but in some years Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi may fall on the same day.

Ganga Dusshera 2023: History
Ganga Dussehra is a day dedicated to Goddess Ganga and it celebrates the emergence of Goddess Ganga as a river leading into the Earth. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Brahma and underwent immense penance to bring the divine river Ganga to Earth. His wish is to free the ancestral spirits from the curse of Sage Kapila. Since Lord Brahma was pleased with Bhagiratha’s devotion, he accepted his wish and requested Lord Shiva to hold the giant goddess Ganga in his tangled locks and gently release her to the Earth. Therefore, Ganga Dussehra commemorates the occasion when the sacred river Ganga descended from heaven to absolve humanity of its sins.
Ganga Dusshera 2023: Meaning
The celebration has great religious and cultural value as it marks the cleansing and purifying power of the sacred river. As in Sanskrit, Dasha means ten and hara means to remove; Therefore, bathing in the river for these ten days is said to help people get rid of ten sins or in other words, ten sins in life. To receive blessings and atone for their sins, devotees gather along the banks of the Ganges and pray, practice various rituals and take a dip in the river.
However, Ganga Dussehra also serves as a reminder of the vital role the Ganges plays in the lives of millions of people, not only as a source of life and physical sustenance but also as a symbol of purity. purifies and saves the spirit.
Ganga Dusshera 2023: Rituals & Celebrations
The usual rituals and celebrations of Ganga Dusshera are the same in all parts of India. Devotees wake up early on Ganga Dussehra, take a dip in the holy Ganga and recite the Ganga Stotra. In the evening, they perform Ganga Aarti and offer flowers, Diya, betel leaves, fruits and sweets to the holy river. People also do charity for the poor and meditate by the riverbank.
On the same day, the Yamuna river is also worshiped and kite flying events are organized in many parts of the country. Devotees in Mathura, Vrindavan and Bateshwar offer watermelons and cucumbers to the Yamuna river and distribute drinks like lassi, sharbat and shikanji to beat the scorching heat.
To honor and express gratitude to the lifeblood of the country, devotees visit Prayagraj/Allahabad, Garhmukteshwar, Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi. Varanasi, in particular, is famous for its vibrant celebrations of Ganga Dussehra. Countless devotees participate in the famous Ganga Aarti at Dasaswamedh Ghat. One can capture this peaceful moment, clearly marking the importance of Ganga Aarti.
