Earth Day 2023: History

In 2004, World Wide Fund Australia in collaboration with Leo Burnett Sydney thought of getting Australians involved in the issue of climate change. And in 2006, the concept of widespread shutdowns was conceived and initially developed under the name “The Big Flick”.

It was celebrated as Earth Day for the first time in 2007 in Sydney. Subsequently, an hour-long abstinence from electricity was observed globally in 2008. This environmental initiative was initiated by WWF to promote energy efficiency and less carbon emissions.

Earth Day 2023: Meaning

According to the Earth Hour Foundation, “The purpose of Earth Hour is to call for global action to protect the environment and raise awareness of how little time we have left to do so. We need our increasingly divided society to unite more than ever to take immediate action for our common home. Everyone and anyone needs to feel motivated and equipped to contribute, no matter how small. The power of the people must be harnessed and celebrated as we continue to light the beacon of hope for a better future.”

Earth Day is therefore a call to action for all people, groups and organizations to consider how their actions affect the environment and to join the global fight against climate change .
