World Athletics Day 2023: World Athletics Day is organized by the IAAF (International Amateur Athletics Federation) on May 7 every year. It was first held in 1996. More than 100 sports federations around the world participated in IAAF World Athletics Day 2016 to promote sports and exercise for good health.

The theme of World Athletics Day 2023 is “Sport for all – A new beginning”.

The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was founded on July 17, 1912 in Stockholm (Sweden). The IAAF is the world governing body for the sport of track and field.

Objectives of World Athletics Day;

1. Popularize sports among young people.

2. Make Athletics the main sport in schools and establishments.

3. Raise public awareness about sports and educate young people about the importance of sports.

How is World Athletics Day celebrated?

The sport of athletics is an exclusive set of sporting events that include competitive events such as walking, running, throwing and jumping etc. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, race walking and cross country running.

Athletics in India;

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is the apex body for the conduct and management of athletics in India and is affiliated with the IAAF and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). AFI has 32 state units and affiliated organizations.

AFI was founded in 1946 and the federation organizes the National Championships and provides coaching for Indian Athletics.

Therefore, the basic purpose of World Athletics Day is to promote sports culture among students from an early age so that they can achieve good results in major events such as the Olympic Games and the World Athletics Games. Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, etc
