Why did the Serbian government take this step?
The decision to deny Indian citizens travel without an appropriate visa was taken following the provisions of the common visa policy of European States. This step is to control illegal immigrants. The Indian Embassy in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, has also issued a travel advisory, stating that Indian regular passport holders are required by the embassy to obtain a visa from the Serbian Embassy in Belgrade before entering the country from January 1, 2023.

The EU issued a statement stating: “The borderless Schengen area cannot function effectively without a common visa policy that facilitates the entry of legal visitors to the EU, while enhancing security internal. The EU has established a common visa policy for transit or intended stay in the territory of Schengen countries for not more than 90 days in any 180-day period and for transit through their international transit areas. airports of Schengen countries.”

Indian citizens with valid passports could previously enter the country without a visa. Indian citizens are allowed to visit without a visa for 30 days per year. However, this facility will no longer be used in 2019.
However, the new visa requirement will not affect Indians holding a valid Schengen, UK or US visa or residence permit in any of the above countries. According to the embassy statement, during the 90-day period, existing Indian passport holders with valid UK, US or Schengen visas can still enter Serbia.
In addition to India, Serbia has stopped visa exemption for citizens of Guinea-Bissau, Tunisia and Burundi.
