Kannada news channel Power TV has introduced its first AI-generated news anchor, Soundarya. The AI presenter made his debut on the channel’s evening news program on Tuesday, July 12, 2023.
This name was given to her by the management and according to Hindustan Times, the AI news anchor introduced herself by saying “Hello everyone. AI is leaving its mark in every industry and it has also entered the TV news industry. Some of my colleagues (AI news anchors) have started presenting news on several channels in north India. I am Soundarya, the first robot host of Power TV in south India.”
Soundarya may be the first AI news anchor for Karnataka but she is not the first. Apart from Soundarya, several other channels in India have also launched their own AI-powered news anchors. Recently, OTV, the Odia news channel, launched Lisa, the state’s first AI news host.
In March, Aaj Tak also unveiled Sana, the first AI-generated news anchor in the country. Sana is described as “bright, beautiful, ageless, tireless, multilingual and always in control”.
The development of Soundarya is a major milestone in the evolution of AI-powered news presentations.
Soundarya’s appearance was met with mixed reactions. Some viewers welcomed the use of AI in news presentations, while others expressed concerns about the potential impact on jobs.
Power TV says that Soundarya is not intended to replace human news presenters. Instead, she is seen as a tool that can be used to supplement traditional news presentations.
The channel said Soundarya will be used to present news stories that are not time-sensitive, such as weather reports and interviews.
