Who is Arjun Ram Meghwal, India’s new Law Minister after Kiren Rijiju?

In a shocking decision, the Modi government has sacked Kiren Rijiju as Union Minister of Law and Justice and replaced him with Arjun Ram Meghwal. Rijiju has been heading the law ministry since 2021. The outspoken BJP man recently attracted criticism from both the opposition and his party for his comments on the judiciary.

Early life of Arjun Ram Meghwal

  • Arjun Ram Meghwal was born to Lakhu Ram Meghwal and Hira Devi on 20 December 1953 in Kishmidesar village in Bikaner, Rajasthan.
  • He is highly educated and holds LLB, Master of Arts and MBA degrees from Dungar College, Bikaner and University of the Philippines.
  • Meghwal qualified the RAS exam in 1982 and was elected to the Rajasthan Udyog Seva. He was appointed as Assistant Director at Jila Udhyog Kendra and served as General Manager of Jila Udhyog Kendra of Shrigananagar, Dhaulpur, Rajsamvad, Jhunjhnu, Jaipur and Alwar districts of Rajasthan.
  • He was appointed as Officer on Special Duty to Mr. Hari Shankar Bhabra, Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan in 1994.
  • Meghwal was promoted as an IAS officer in the 1999 Rajasthan cadre and managed several administrative posts: Deputy Secretary, Technical Education; Special Secretary, Higher Education; Managing Director, Rajasthan Laghu Udhyog Nigam Limited; Additional Commissioner; Commercial Tax Department; District Collector and District Magistrate, Churu.

Political career of Arjun Ram Meghwal

  • Arjun Ram Meghwal found his calling in politics and voluntarily retired from civil services.
  • His political career began in 2009 when he was elected as a Member of Parliament from Bikaner Constituency in Rajasthan, representing the Bhartiya Janata Party.
  • He was re-elected from Bikaner Constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.
  • He briefly held the positions of Minister of State for Finance and MoS.
  • In 2019, Meghwal was inducted into Narendra Modi’s cabinet as MoS Parliamentary Home Affairs and Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises MoS.
  • From 18 May 2023, he assumed the post of Union Minister of Law and Justice, replacing Kiren Rijiju.
  • Arjun Ram Meghwal is also an educationist, farmer and social worker apart from a politician.
