Why is Counter-Terrorism Day 2023 celebrated in India?
On 21 May 1991, the official announcement was made following the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He was killed in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, during a terrorist campaign by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
After the assassination, the VP Singh government decided to observe May 21 as Anti-Terrorism Day. On this day, all government offices, public agencies and other public organizations must make commitments.

In 2022, it’s a Saturday. And to avoid inconvenience for employees who have to travel far to work on Saturday, it was decided that the “Commitment Receiving Ceremony” at Central agencies will be held on Friday (May 20, 2022).
However, if Saturday is not a public holiday of the State or UT administration then the ‘commitment ceremony’ will be held on May 21, 2022. It is best to hold it in the morning.
It was also stated that, to protect the safety of participants and organizers and avoid public gatherings, officials may be advised to solemnly take the pledge in a room or their office. Attach a copy of the “commitment” in both English and Hindi (Appendix).
Additionally, considering the importance of this event, various ways to spread the anti-terrorism message will be implemented, including social and digital media platforms.
