What is YouTube’s upgraded Premium 1080p option?

YouTube has announced that it is rolling out a 1080p Premium upgrade option for web users and select TV devices.

A new option for YouTube Premium subscribers, offering a higher bitrate than the standard 1080p option, resulting in sharper and less compressed images.

The update was confirmed to The Verge, and Paul Pennington told The Verge: “YouTube’s higher-quality 1080p option is now available to all Premium desktop subscribers globally.”

The upgraded 1080p Premium option is available now on YouTube’s desktop web client as well as on select TV devices, including Google’s non-Android-based Chromecast and game consoles.

YouTube has yet to announce a specific timeline for when the new option will be available on all supported devices.

If you don’t have YouTube Premium, the platform has a regular 1080p option, which is still roughly the same as the enhanced bitrate version.

\YouTube says the upgraded 1080p Premium option is especially beneficial for videos with a lot of motion, such as action movies or sports broadcasts. A higher bitrate helps reduce compression, which can make videos look blurry or pixelated.

YouTube also recently increased its Premium subscription from $12 to $14, and the company is testing out many new features to make its subscription stand out.

The company recently announced a screen lock feature that has been a part of Netflix for years so users don’t have to worry about pausing or skipping videos.
