WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows users to send high-quality videos. The feature is currently available to some beta testers and is expected to be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks.
This was announced by WABetaInfo, the trusted source for all WhatsApp updates being tested. The blog states: “The high-quality video sending feature, along with improvements to the profile icon in group chats, is available to select beta testers who install the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS from the TestFlight app and calculate This feature is being rolled out to more people. in the coming days.”

As the image above shows, users will need to select the “HD” option when sending videos. This option will be available in the same place where users currently choose the quality of the photos they submit.
This feature may receive updates in the future because even when selecting a video, it still shows the “Photo quality” option.
When sending a video in HD, WhatsApp will compress the video a bit but the quality will still be much higher than the standard video quality available. This will make it easier for users to share clearer and sharper videos even when they are sent over slow Internet connections.
WABetaInfo mentions, “as the HD option now also appears when selecting a video from the Photos app. As we explained in our previous article where we announced a high quality option for images, this option maintains video size but light compression is still applied to the video.”
It’s important to note that sending high quality video may use more data than sending standard quality video. Therefore, users should be mindful of data usage when sending high-quality videos.
Additionally, the platform mentioned that this new update also includes additional improvements to the profile icon in group chats. Previously, if a contact’s profile photo was hidden or unavailable, it would just show up as an empty gray circle.
Now, these thumbnails will be changed to the abbreviation of the contact name. This will make it easier for other group members to recognize them.
Videos submitted in high quality will be marked as HD. Furthermore, this update only works for videos sent in chats and not for videos being uploaded to WhatsApp status.
The blog mentions, “When a user shares a video using the high quality option, the video will be marked as high quality in the chat and a new tag will automatically be added to the message bubble, as shown in attached screenshot.”
“This additional information will help the recipient determine that the video was sent in better quality. It is important to mention that this feature is not available when sharing videos via status updates,” it added.
