In 2005, India and the United States were the key countries behind UNDEF. At this time, these two countries are brokering a civil nuclear cooperation agreement, with S Jaishankar as the chief negotiator.
Now, UNDEF grants grants to George Soros-funded NGOs. However, the man was on a watch list in India in 2016 and the country is a founding member of the United Nations Democracy Fund. This certainly creates a contradictory situation to understand.
United Nations Democracy Fund
Established in 2005, the United Nations Democracy Fund aims to support democratization efforts globally. It was founded by Kofi A. Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations.
UNDEF was welcomed by the General Assembly in the 2005 World Summit Outcome Document.
UNDEF makes a huge impact in supporting other UN work with governments to support and promote democratic governance around the world.
Mission of the United Nations Democracy Fund
The United Nations Democracy Fund has a mission to encourage and support projects that promote the voice of civil society. UNDEF supports human rights and promotes the participation of not one but all groups in the democratic process.
Administration of UNDEF
Located within the United Nations Secretariat, the United Nations Democracy Fund is under the direct authority of the United Nations Secretary-General. UNDEF’s Advisory Board directs the UN Secretary-General. The United Nations’ advisory board includes the seven largest donor countries. These countries include Japan, the United States, Australia, Germany, India, Spain and Qatar. Since 2007, Professor Michael Doyle of Columbia University has served as president. All members of UNDEF serve a two-year term. UNDEF’s Advisory Group serves as the United Nations’ inter-agency mechanism providing expert advice. Such advice includes recommendations for choosing projects. The UNDEF Program Advisory Group includes the Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the Department of Politics, the Office of Peacebuilding Support, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, the Department of Politics, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations Office on Drugs. and Crime, and the United Nations Development Programme.
To ensure low investment costs, only a small team of four experts manages the UNDEF office. These experts are led by Roland Rich of Australia.
UNDEF missions and projects
The United Nations Democracy Fund supports projects aimed at strengthening civil society, promoting human rights and promoting the participation of not just one but every group in democratic processes.
Most of this money goes to CSOs – local civil society organizations.
