What is the Commission on the Status of Women?
The world’s main intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women is the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). By resolution ECOSOC 11(II) of 21 June 1946, a functional committee of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established.
CSW plays a vital role in promoting women’s rights, capturing the realities of women’s lives globally and setting international standards for gender equality and women’s empowerment.
How does the Commission on the Status of Women work?
The Commission adopted multi-year work plans to assess progress and make new recommendations to accelerate implementation of the Platform for Action. These proposals come in the form of negotiated agreements of top priority. Also:
- Establish a ministerial subcommittee to reaffirm and strengthen political commitment to achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls.
- It engages in a general discussion on the state of gender equality, highlighting achievements and efforts being made to close gaps and overcome obstacles.
- Organize interactive expert discussions and other interactive dialogues on initiatives to accelerate implementation and capacity development steps to mainstream gender equality into policies and programs submit.
- Evaluate progress in implementing agreed conclusions from previous sessions as a review topic.
- Discuss timely new questions about the status of women, including equality between men and women, as well as emerging issues, trends, focus areas and approaches.
- Adopted the agreed conclusions and resolutions, and agreed on additional actions to promote gender equality and empower women.
- It supports the work of other intergovernmental bodies and processes by adding gender perspectives.

What is the multi-year program for Women’s Day 2023?
During the two-week session of the Commission, various events will be organized with the participation of NGOs and international organizations. All programs will be based on the priority theme of “Innovation and change in technology and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.” . And review topic “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and empowering rural women and girls”
The 67th CSW session will open with a general discussion, continue with interactive sessions chaired by youth representatives, and end with an action draft of the proposals of the Economic and Social Council that has been approved. The Socio-Economic Council unanimously approved. In addition, the outcome of the Commission’s discussion on the session’s priority topics will be a set of consensus conclusions to be negotiated by all Member States.
In addition to this theme, in line with the priority theme of the 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW-67), the theme of International Women’s Day 2023 is “DigitalALL: Innovation and technology for equality gender equality”.
It will explore the impacts of the digital gender gap on growing economic and social inequality, and highlight the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital space as well as addressing gender-based violence enabled online and ICT.
