What is Joshimath?
Joshimath is a small town in Chamoli district of Uttarkhand.
The town is located in Zone V of the country’s seismic zoning scheme.
Crisis in Joshimath
A total of 723 houses in 9 wards of the town had cracked ceilings, walls, and floors. In addition, beams in many houses were also dislodged.
The first cracks appeared in October 2021. The authorities failed to take the necessary steps. In January, around 145 families were temporarily relocated to relatively safer locations in Joshimath. Amid all this, there are concerns about the town’s future.
What does the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) say?
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has revealed some shocking findings in a report. In the report, ISRO said Joshimath sank 5.4 cm in the time frame from December 27, 2022 to January 8, 2023.
However, later, the satellite photos and reports were also removed from ISRO’s website.
