What is Hybrid Model in Cricket?

The 2023 Asian Cup is approaching and there is much controversy about the much-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has refused to allow the Indian team to travel to Pakistan due to poor cross-border relations between the two countries.

However, the BCCI and other participating Asia Cup nations accepted the hybrid model proposed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), breaking the deadlock between the two teams. The 2023 Asian Cup is currently expected to take place smoothly in Pakistan and at a neutral venue to facilitate India.

Let’s dig deeper into the hybrid model in cricket and how it works.

What is the hybrid model in Cricket?

  • The hybrid model is a relatively new rule set in cricket and has been discussed over the past year due to the 2023 Asia Cup controversy between India and Pakistan.
  • India refused to go to Pakistan, host of the Asian Cup, because of tense diplomatic and security relations. On the contrary, Pakistan threatened to boycott the ICC Cricket World Cup.
  • The PCB proposed a hybrid regime in which games involving India would be played outside Pakistan in neutral territories such as Sri Lanka or Bangladesh.
  • Both countries initially rejected the combined model, but after much deliberation, Sri Lanka agreed to host India’s Asia Cup matches. The UAE is also considered a possible venue for India’s matches. India too has little interest in this model but BCCI President Jay Shah is said to have accepted the PCB’s terms.
  • Thus, through the combined model, Pakistan retains the right to host the Asian Cup while India plays in Sri Lanka, a neutral venue from the perspective of both conflicting countries.
  • The final will also take place in Sri Lanka. All non-India matches will be played as planned in Pakistan itself.
  • The plan was devised by PCB chief Najam Sethi.
