Uncoordinated excavation and excavating on roads not only always causes trouble for pedestrians and tourists but also leads to loss of about Rs. 3,000 crore per year. To combat such inconveniences and more, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Call Before You Dig” (CBuD) App. The purpose of launching the app is to facilitate coordination between underground utility owners and excavation agencies to prevent damage to utilities caused by uncoordinated excavation.

Necessity of the application

As an initiative of the Department of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Communications intends to prevent damage to basic assets such as fiber optic cables caused by uncoordinated excavations, using this application. Such damages cause losses of up to Rs 3,000 crore every year.

The goal will be to help reduce people’s discomfort, while also saving on potential business losses. The disruption caused to the people in essential services such as telecommunications, water, electricity, gas and roads will be reduced through this application.

Application

First, the Call Before u Dig app will connect the excavator with the property owner. This will be done via SMS/Email notifications and click to call. This will ensure that digging and excavation is carried out as planned in India, while also ensuring that underground assets are safe.

This app aims to provide excavation companies with one point of contact. Through one point of contact, excavation companies can easily inquire about existing subsurface utilities before commencing excavation activities. For utility owners, the app will help learn about upcoming work at the site.
