What is Japan Airlines’ clothes-on-arrival program?

Japan Airlines has launched a revolutionary plan, called the clothing rental upon arrival plan, for all its passengers.

On June 5, the airline began a year-long pilot project to give passengers the option of not bringing suitcases and renting all their clothes as soon as they arrive in Japan.

According to the airline, the program is for passengers who wish to make “sustainable choices”, by reducing the weight of each aircraft. JAL expects to reduce fuel consumption, leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

Project of JAL

The plan presented by JAL is called “Any Wear, Anywhere”. Under this program, a potential visitor to Japan can reserve his or her clothing for a period of one month for 14 days of use.

Appropriate attire for tourists can be provided after they clearly determine the purpose of their visit. The clothes will be delivered to their accommodation or hotel. According to JAL, there can be a huge selection of clothes to choose from. Bundles of these garments can start at as little as 4,000 yen, which is around Rs 2,300.

This means that a passenger traveling to Japan on business will get a set of three pants and five tops for around 5,000 yen, or Rs 2,900.

The reason behind JAL’s decision

“JAL’s goal is to reduce baggage weight to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to solving environmental problems,” the airline expressed in a written statement.

The climate crisis is growing, and the debate around aviation emissions is intensifying. Air transport accounts for about 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions each year, and if non-CO2 emissions are included, aviation will account for almost 5% of historic global warming, according to the United Nations climate change report.
