What is an electronic passport? How they meet the security needs of quantum computing and How to apply, all you need to know

India To Launch E-Passprts

E-Passport: Ausaf Saeed, Minister of State (Consular, Visa, Passport and Overseas Indians) stated in a press conference that the end of 2022 or early next year may witness the emergence of electronic passports. However, this does not mean that current booklet passports will not be used. This man said the new electronic passport will be similar to a booklet-style passport, but with an additional chip attached.

T Armstrong Changsan, Director of Passport explained that the electronic passport chip will contain all the passport holder’s data printed on the passport. This includes the passport holder’s name, address, date of birth details, etc

The back cover of the passport will feature a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna, helping officials check and verify traveler information easily and quickly.

Target

The purpose of launching electronic passports is to reduce the risk of counterfeit passports, while also making them tamper-proof. This will therefore increase security.

Currently, switching to an electronic passport is not mandatory, however, it will become easier to switch to an electronic passport.

Advantages of electronic passports

Benefits of Indian ePassport are:

  • Passengers with electronic passports will not need to stand in long queues for hours. Due to electronic passports, details will be scanned in just a few seconds.
  • The e-passport will reduce cases of fraud as it contains biometric records of passengers.
  • No one can delete information from a passport.

How to apply for an electronic passport?

The steps are quite simple.

  • Visit the Passport Seva website. Click on the “Register Now” button or simply log in with your existing id.
  • Click the “Apply for new passport” or “Reissue passport” button.
  • Provide necessary details. Click the “Send” button.
  • Click “Pay and schedule appointment” to make payment.

Finally, print the receipt or purchase SMS confirmation at POPSK/PSK/PO.

Updated security for electronic passports

Now, an electronic passport that meets the security needs of quantum computing has been launched as a prototype using a version of the EAC protocol that has been developed against quantum computers.

It secures the biometric information of the passport holder during the authentication process.

  • According to a recent update, this security controller is manufactured by Infineon Technologies and it can protect biometric and demographic data carried by electronic passports from conventional and quantum computers.
  • This is the first technology to ensure that electronic passports meet the security needs of the quantum computing era.

How do prototypes work?

  • This prototype uses a version of the Extensible Access Control (EAC) protocol against quantum computers and secures the biometric information of the passport holder during authentication through it.
  • This method allows data to pass between the e-passport terminal and the checkpoint in a contactless fashion.
  • The electronic passport uses updated methods that are also compatible with existing established structures.
  • The cryptographic methods, Dilithium and Kyber used by this technology were selected by the US National Standards Institute (NSIT) in 2022.
  • The technology was developed with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated and Application Security (AISEC) and the Bundesdruckerei (German Federal Printing Office) and is currently on display at Trustech.
