Protests in France against the pension reform!

So far there have been four rounds of protests in France related to the plan to reform the French pension system put forward by President Emanuel. Some 960,000 people took part in marches in Nice, Toulouse, Paris, Nantes and Marseille among other cities on Saturday. According to the government, about 93,000 people participated. This was certainly seen as large numbers of people protested through demonstrations in the capital against the pension proposals.

To the relief of the government and many citizens, strikes by railway workers did not occur. This means that trains and the Paris Metro are operating as normal during these protests. However, half the flights from Orly, Paris’ second largest airport, were canceled at noon on Saturday due to a sudden strike by air traffic controllers.

Saturday’s protests showed major unrest in the country. Countless trash cans and a car were burned on a central Paris avenue as police tried to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

According to Paris police officers, about eight people were arrested for violations such as gun possession and vandalism.

Banners in the French capital, Place de la Republique, read emotional messages such as “I don’t want my parents to die at work.” It would not be wrong to say that not only individuals but also families participated in the protests.

If one looks at the polls, dislike for the President’s growing opposition to reform would be two conclusions to be drawn. However, President Macron stated that he is working on an important election campaign commitment he made before coming to power in 2017.

A fierce political battle is what the President’s government is facing in parliament. The battle will last for weeks, months.
