What happened on December 16, 1971?
The 1971 Indo-Pakistani War was a military conflict between India and Pakistan that took place in East Pakistan from 3 December 1971 until Pakistan’s surrender at Dhaka on 16 December 1971. War Liberating Bangladesh, the conflict broke out after Pakistan launched Operation Chengiz Khan, a campaign of pre-emptive air strikes on 11 Indian air force stations. This action sparked hostilities with Pakistan and India’s support for Bengali nationalist forces in East Pakistan’s war for independence, escalating the existing conflict with these forces. India and Pakistan are fighting on both the eastern and western fronts. The Pakistan army’s Eastern Command signed the surrender instrument on 16 December 1971 in Dhaka, thirteen days after the war began, giving India a clear advantage. This signaled the creation of East Pakistan as the new state of Bangladesh.

How does India celebrate Vijay Diwas 2022?
On December 16, 2022, or Vijay Diwas, the Southern Command will simultaneously organize ‘Southern Star Vijay Run-22’ in Pune and 15 other cities across the Southern Command Area of Responsibility to commemorate the historic military victory over Pakistan in the 1971 War. This mega event with the slogan “Run for Soldiers – Run with Soldiers” aims to strengthen the bond between the Indian Army and the public, especially the youth. “VIJAY RUN 22” participants will honor martyrs while showcasing the strength, potential and vitality of our country.

“Vijay Run-22” will have three different categories: a 12.5 km race for everyone with separate races for men and women, a 5 km race for students and a 4 km race for women only. For the said running event, the total prize money will be Rs 50,000 for the distance of 12.5 Km and Rs 22,000/- for the running event for women and students respectively.
During the “Vijay Diwas” conflict of 1971, 3,900 Indian soldiers were killed and 9,851 others were injured.
