What is a tornado?

A cyclone is a large mass of air that revolves around a strong center of low atmospheric pressure. It is characterized by strong winds. It is caused by atmospheric disturbances that are formed in low-pressure areas over the sea.

About Tornadoes

Origin: The term ‘Cyclone’ is derived from the Greek word ‘Cyclos’ which means ‘Coil of a snake’.

Definition: A cyclone is a violent swirl in the atmosphere with very strong winds that rotate around it in a counterclockwise and clockwise direction in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively.

Classification: Tornadoes are classified based on the following principles:

1. Low pressure zone: Less than 17 knots (< 31 km/h)

2. Reduced speed: 17 to 27 knots (31 to 49 km/h)

3. Deep lowlands: 28 to 33 knots (50 to 61 km/h)

4. Cyclone: ​​34 to 47 knots (62 to 88 km/h)

5. Severe Cyclone Storm: 48 to 63 knots (89 to 118 km/h)

6. Very severe cyclone: ​​64 to 119 knots (119 to 221 km/h)

7. Super cyclone: ​​120 knots or more (222 km/h or more)

Cyclone Biparjoy

Cyclone Biparjoy was an extremely severe cyclonic storm that originated in the central eastern Arabian Sea on June 6. It reached a maximum speed of 195 km/h. It is expected to make landfall in Gujarat on June 15, 2023 at speeds in excess of 150 km/h.

Cyclone Sitrang

Cyclone Sitrang was a weak tropical cyclone that struck the eastern and northeastern states of Assam, Odisha, West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between 22 and 25 October 2022.

Asani Cyclone

Cyclone Asani is the first cyclone storm of 2022. It made landfall on the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and caused heavy rainfall in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha between the 7th and 7th of April. May 12, 2022.

Cyclone Jawad

After three cyclones in 2021, another is expected to hit the Indian states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Before Cyclone Jawad, Prime Minister Modi considered the possibility of preparing for the situation arising after the cyclone and many authorities are ready. State governments have also drawn up disaster management strategies, and up to 95 trains passing through or departing from the East Coast Railroad have been cancelled.

Cyclone Gulaab

Months after Cyclone Yaas left a trail of devastation across several Indian states, Cyclone Gulaab hit the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for northern Andhra Pradesh and the adjacent Odisha coast on September 25.

Tornado Tauktae

This is the first cyclonic storm of 2021 to emerge from the Arabian Sea. It hit southern Gujarat on May 17, 2021 and was classified as a Very Severe Cyclone Storm (VSCS). As many as 24 people died in three Indian states. Twelve people died in Maharashtra, eight in Karnataka and four in Gujarat.

Cyclone Yaas

Cyclone storm Yaas formed in the Bay of Bengal and hit West Bengal and adjoining Odisha coasts in May 2021. The name of the cyclone was given by Oman.
