Instagram recently introduced its new social media platform, Threads on July 6. It is considered the strongest competitor to Twitter. On the first day of launch, this application reached a record of 50 million users.
However, Europe does not use Threads at all. Why?

Are not. People from Europe cannot access Threads. Many of Threads’ features are similar to Twitter, and this fact has caused some controversy and decreased revenue. This has caused technology companies to think about potential alternative products. Instagram is famous for being an app that mainly has visual content, Threads by Instagram is different.
However, in Europe, the situation is not the same as in the rest of the world. Europe will only be able to see the implementation of Threads once Meta decides to do so. Meta spokesperson Matt Pollard issued a statement that the company is not yet making Threads available to the European market because of upcoming regulatory uncertainty.
This means Meta is looking for clarity from the European agency in charge of regulating such apps. The app is seeking approval from the European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, so that Meta can release Themes in EU countries.
The need for approval
In March 2022, a law was passed in the EU Parliament, called the European Union Digital Market Act (DMA). The DMA is considered one of the strictest data and privacy protection laws worldwide. The law’s main purpose is to limit the influence of big tech companies and balance regulation for other companies. This, in turn, affects the quality of user experience and choices made online.
