India’s longest escape tunnel

Recently on Thursday, Indian Railways completed a tunnel on the Banihal-Katra section of the Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Railway (USBRL) located in Jammu and Kashmir.

The tunnel is India’s longest “escape tunnel” with a length of 12.89 km.

Here’s everything you need to know about tunnels:

Railway officials said the longest escape tunnel has been designed to promote rescue work in case of emergency.

The tunnel passes through the Ramban formation of the Himalayas and besides, countless tributaries and drains of the Chenab river such as Khoda, Kundan nallah and Hingni pass along the route. This makes drilling an extremely difficult task, according to a government release.

The tunnel is the fourth tunnel on the Banihal-Katra route. In January, T-49, a 12.75 km long tunnel was completed. The tunnel was built according to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This is a modern technique of drilling and blasting process.
