What is NCAP?

NCAP began on January 10, 2019. It stated that 131 failing cities that did not meet national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) between 2011 and 2015 must reduce their levels. pollution from the basic level in 2017 to 25-30%. The Center in September 2022 set a target of reducing pollution by 40% with a deadline of 2026.

Delhi appears to be falling behind its deadline, recording only a 7% drop in PM2.5 levels.

This is shown when comparing the data with 2019 levels, an analysis based on Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data. The annual national safety limit for PM2.5 is 40µg/m3.

Analyze the situation

said Climate Trends Director, Aarti Khosla

“The top nine cities are also located across the Indo-Gangetic plain, which is a problem area in general. The analysis shows that coastal cities like Mumbai are equally affected by air pollution. While the CPCB has issued stricter mitigation targets for cities that have not yet met the standards, we are only a year away from 2024, the original target for NCAP and many cities, including Delhi, too, is still far from achieving its mitigation target,”

The Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has conducted another analysis in which data shows that Delhi is on the list of 48 out of 131 non-compliant cities, falling behind the targets. set by the Center.

Sunil Dahiya, an analyst at CREA said,

“This shows that Delhi is lagging far behind the annual targets and hence, it is unlikely to achieve the long-term target by 2026. We have analyzed the financial year data, as the Center is currently linked the financial year’s performance to the issuance of the fund,”
