The Telangana region of Hyderabad state began to organize itself in the early 1950s with the need to form a separate state. The agitation for statehood in 1969 was a result of the Gentlemen’s Agreement not being implemented and the Telangana region remained discriminated against in employment, education and public government spending. The residents of Telangana began uniting under various organizations in the mid-1990s with the demand for their own state of Telangana. On November 29, 2009, KCR announced a hunger strike to press for Telangana statehood. Students, workers and people’s organizations all joined the movement, which quickly spread like wildfire. The UPA government then started the statehood process in July 2013 and completed it in February 2014 after four years of effective and non-violent protest.

Telangana Culture

The Geography, Polity and Economy of the region have determined the culture of Telangana. Northern and Southern India are connected by Telangana. Therefore, it is not surprising that the region in general is known for Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. Apart from this, the Qutub Shahi and Asafjahi kings encouraged the growth of Qawali, Ghazals and Mushairas.

Festival

Telangana is home to people of different religions and beliefs, which clearly shows the celebration of different festivals. Hindu holidays including Ugadi, Sri Rama Navami, Bonalu, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Dasara, Deepavali, Sankranti, Holi and Mahashivaratri are celebrated with enthusiasm, joy and devotion. Dasara is the main festival called pedda pandura along with Ghattam.
